Fonts[edit]

The standard font for church materials is Montserrat. For worship slides, Montserrat Semi Bold or Montserrat Bold are also possible to be used, but the "alternates" are not used for official church content.

The church also uses Pill Gothich 300mg Bold and Northwell for logos.

Font Size[edit]

Minimum font size takes into account both the readability of the text for people in the room on the screen, and also people at home through insets on livestream.

The minimum font size for general slides is 36pt.

As a general rule, worship slides should be twice the minimum, or at least 72 pt.

Colors[edit]

While white on black is usually the easiest to read for most content, there are many practical uses for different color choices. However, there are several practical issues that should be taken into account:

  • Color Blindness considerations
  • The fact that colors on the projected screen are significantly more muted or washed out compared to a normal monitor.
  • Some colors just do not work well together for readability.

Therefore, as a general rule, we recommend that you put the two colors you want into the tool at Contrast-Ratio.com and ensure you have a score of at least 5.

Reference: Font Size Calculation[edit]

(From the initial research email):

This site has a good starting point for video walls.

Let's use their suggestion of 1" per 15' of distance from the screen. The approximate max distance from the closer screen at the church is about 42', so let's assume we want 3" high text as a minimum.

Next we have to figure out the ppi of the screen so we know how high this font needs to be. I suspect the screen is actually 4:3 instead of 16:9, but we are still outputting 1080p. The screen I expect is 12'x9'. This means a 15' diagonal screen, at only a 12 ppi (based on a calculation on this site).

Therefore, we want the text 36 pixels high. According to the first article, pt sizes are usually a bit smaller than the pixel size, so let's go with 75% off, or about 28 pt as the minimum.

Now, clearly, this is just the projector screens. However, phones and tablets have a much larger dpi and people are closer, so those should scale just fine.
